0:36 airpods lol. Despite being almost 2 hours, the movie keeps a good pace to keep kids and adults entertained. I took my 4 year old to see it and it held his attention and several laughs from not only him, but everyone in the theater. I was a bit shocked to see repeated gun use, and instance of gambling, and several instances of alcohol, but it is an action spy movie so I should have guessed as much. Regardless, I found the humor very well done. Hopefully it hits a streaming service in the near future so I can rewatch.

We think this movie stands out for: A lot or a little? The parents' guide to what's in this movie. Viewers will learn a lot about pigeon anatomy and physiology (like the fact that the birds have 360-degree vision and have a single orifice, called the cloaca, for doing "number one and number two. Promotes nonviolent (or at least nonlethal) means of negotiating and stopping criminals. Also focuses on need for teamwork and accepting that others' skills and talents can help, not hurt, you. Walter and Lance's growing partnership shows that co-workers and friends don't need to be alike to get along or work well together. Positive Role Models & Representations Lance is brash, arrogant, quick to get rid of opponents, but learns to be more cautious, think of others, try to stop the villain from hurting anyone. Walter is kind, courageous, concerned with helping. Lots of action sequences and weapons-based violence between Lance and his targets. A frightening villain plans to kill all agents. People are shot at, captured, knocked unconscious; some life-or-death scenes in which it looks like all is (almost) lost. Physical comedy. A parent dies (off-screen, but the emotional impact is felt. Lots of flirting from Walter's pet pigeon, Lovey, to Lance (in pigeon form. She keeps fluffing up her feathers and sidling up to him; he responds by pushing her away or saying "Not now, girl. Nonsexual nudity: Kimura's naked backside is visible and shown for a while when he emerges from the bath. Lance looks down into his pants as he starts shrinking into a bird and shrieks. "Weird" and "weirdo" are often used to insult Walter. Nothing on-screen, but a few tie-ins off-screen, including a video game. Drinking, Drugs & Smoking Gangsters shown drinking. What parents need to know Parents need to know that Spies in Disguise is an animated buddy comedy featuring the voices of Will Smith as Lance Sterling, a Bond-like American superspy, and Tom Holland as Walter Beckett, a gadget-happy inventor. After Lance accidentally drinks Walter's invisibility concoction and is turned into a pigeon, the odd-couple duo must work together to save the world from a frightening villain who's using Lance's face to commit criminal acts. There are lots of action sequences involving spy gear and weapons, as well as some life-or-death scenes in which it looks like all is (almost) lost. One character loses a parent; it happens off screen, and no details are discussed, but the emotional impact is felt. The physical comedy includes some rude humor (jokes about bird genitalia, for example)  and there's a long scene in which a large, tattooed villain's naked behind is visible a few times. A female pigeon frequently flirts with Lance in his bird form. The chemistry between the voice actors is great, and the film has worthy messages about teamwork and accepting help from others. And for all the action, the movie also clearly promotes nonviolent (or at least nonlethal) means of negotiating with and stopping criminals. Stay up to date on new reviews. It is a kids movie, but its incredibly violent: knife to the throat. Continue reading Kid, 11 years old January 26, 2020 What's the story? SPIES IN DISGUISE is an animated spy thriller about two very different men. Suave master spy Lance Sterling (voiced by  Will Smith) is known for not mussing his tuxedo while taking down international criminals, while awkward Walter Beckett ( Tom Holland) is a young, brilliant inventor who creates spy gear. When a mysterious terrorist is able to use tech to disguise himself as Agent Sterling while committing violent crimes, Lance turns to Walter for help and unexpectedly drinks a newly perfected serum that looks like water. But the invisibility concoction doesn't make Sterling disappear: Instead, it turns him into a pigeon. While in bird form, Lance must team up with Walter as his new/unlikely partner in order to take down the face-stealing mastermind. Is it any good? Smith and Holland have great buddy-comedy chemistry and give this weird-in-a-good-way animated adventure a charming, crowd-pleasing vibe. Blue Sky Animation has an impressive track record with animal-focused comedies (four Ice Age films and two Rio movies) and Spies in Disguise continues the studio's streak with the wacky twist of Smith's smooth-talking agent turning into a talking blue pigeon (complete with a tiny tuxedo bow-tie tattoo. Some of the humor may go over very young viewers' heads, but tweens will appreciate the pigeon anatomy jokes, as well as the dark, drone-obsessed adversary ( Ben Mendelsohn, who's quite comfortable playing villains and can sound quite chilling. Although the two leads work mostly as a duo, the talented supporting cast includes Reba McEntire as Sterling's unit director, Rashida Jones as an internal affairs investigator (who believes Sterling has turned traitor) and Karen Gillan and DJ Khaled as her well-intentioned but misguided team. The Mark Ronson-produced soundtrack prominently features Rob Base's "It Takes Two" for the Gen X parents. Rocket Fuel" by DJ Shadow and De La Soul, Fly" by Lucky Daye, and other high-energy tracks. But what really elevates this story is Walter's insistence on nonviolence (or at least nonlethal violence) creating gadgets and tech that focus on distracting and humanizing enemies with glitter-and-kitten bombs and other adorable innovations. The movie's sweet, heartwarming message of peace and understanding is one everyone could use. Talk to your kids about... Families can talk about the positive messages in Spies in Disguise. What does Lance learn about peaceful negotiation thanks to Walter? Why is it important not to be casually OK with  violence, even if it's for government reasons? Which characters do you consider  role models in the movie? What are their character strengths? What are your favorite buddy movies? Why do you think the genre works, particularly in action/adventure? What are some of your favorite examples? Why are the buddies usually "odd couples" with very different personalities, strengths, and styles? Do you think there's potential for a sequel to this movie? If so, what would you like to see more of in the story? Character Strengths Our editors recommend Terrific, action-packed superhero sequel was worth the wait. Just the right combination of fantasy and comedy. Super-dog adventure is fun, age-appropriate for kids. This animated WWII story may not engage all kids. Sweet story about compassion, nonviolence has a few scares. country: USA, Germany tomatometer: 8,3 of 10 star release Date: 2019 director: Terrence Malick A Hidden Life is a movie starring August Diehl, Valerie Pachner, and Maria Simon. The Austrian Franz Jägerstätter, a conscientious objector, refuses to fight for the Nazis in World War II Actor: Karin Neuhäuser. Free Download A Hidden life style. Fall in love with someone who is dying of cancer is beautiful thing its only beginning of love always and forever. Free Download A Hidden life and times. Simon's a good egg.

This film was pretty much wholesome funny energy. Mom -How do you know how to do this? Son -YouTube That is real talk right there !😂😂. After two hours in now squirming in my seat due to my falling asleep, I realized Malick's complete control or light, sound and TIME. Many reviews (even those who praised it) felt it was TOO long. I disagree, the length was important to show the duration of pain and suffering this family went through to a man who could not be wavered in his conscience, even if it meant the ultimate sacrifice. I have read that Malick takes a least a year to edit his footage, and as someone who has some experience in this area, it shows. Some feel his shots are tedious and redundant, but I felt each showed a similar scene with new elements, be it the time-of-day, season, or even a different sound. Also, the intimacy he conveys in a touch, be it gentle or forceful is reinforced through his editing technique. Finally, the music not only fit, but became a part of the mood, without standing out, and screaming "listen to me" as some directors (cough, cough Spielberg) seem to do. Like his far more popular "Tree of Life, I feel this shows even more maturity and experience in his craft.
Highly recommended, but please see it in a theatre or at least on a screen of 100" in 4K with a quality sound system. Sadly most theatres, including Regal are still using 2K projectors. With my failing eyes, it is getting harder and harder to discern the difference (even with glasses) but this film demands it.

Terrence Malick. Returns to the narrative cinema with the moving, very accessible work. He sets a very human monument to this silent, indomitable hero and honors all those who follow their conscience today. now here in the cinema: Translated.

On the one hand it attracts young men, sometimes into marriage, and on the other it can seem to justify the accusation of being called a slut. And should the woman have a baby outside marriage, then the accusation is proved and the girl condemned and if punishment follows, it will be considered validated. It's not much different today, is it? Call a girl a slut and people look at her askance. Not a nice person, not... "For history as far as I can see is not the arrangement of what happens, in sequence and in truth, but a fabulous arrangement of surmises and guesses held up as a banner against the assault of withering truth. The Secret Scripture is a sublime work of fiction about memory and its effect on history and truth. Its about love and loss, grief, religion and Ireland. It nearly broke my heart, but left me with a glimpse of joy and hope. Its a slow unraveling of the mystery surrounding the reason why... A superbly crafted novel told in under 300 pages. A story so cleverly written that for half of the Novel I believed I was reading a non fiction account. image: Rosanne Mc Nulty is nearing her hundredth birthday in the mental hospital where she was committed as a young woman. Finishing up his case notes before the hospital is closed psychiatrist Dr Greene finds himself intrigued by the story of his elderly patient. While Dr Green investigates, Roseanne looks back on the tragedies and passions she... Are you an honest person? Truly? Perhaps you instinctively think “Yes”, even as you realise you are not always scrupulously so, often for the best of reasons. Often. But not always. One cant be totally honest all the time, can one? Can one? What is “truth” anyway, but a social construct? “ What's wrong about her account if she sincerely believes it? ” “ There is no factual truth. ” It matters more that the person is “ admirable, living, and complete ” - what a curious trio of adjectives. In a post-truth... Last month my book club read Sebastian Barry's "Days Without End" and we all loved it unconditionally. That almost never happens. So our hostess up for the April read decided to assign another of Barry's books, although she had some reservations that it might compare unfavorably to the one we thought so highly of. How can it possibly be as good, she asked? She needn't have worried, because it was as good, but in a different way. The language was still soaring and poetic, the characters just as... For most of her life she has been a patient in Roscommon Mental hospital in rural west Ireland. This "mad" woman has lived here most of her adult life. The hospital is going to be shut down and she is facing a scary future of being moved from where she has lived most of her life. She has frequent talks with her therapist/psychiatrist in the weeks leading up to the hospital's closure. Her therapists job is to determine what to do with the patients left... A wonderful, poetic book about love and memory. Also pain, and loss, and how you can miss the most important thing in the world, even though it's right under your nose. Ireland too, of course. We're all innocent Roseanne, locked up in an asylum for decades for no reason, or because she happened to be born with the wrong religion, or because the jealous people around her find her beauty too disturbing. She never really knows why, but she manages to forgive her tormentors anyway, even the cruel Fr... I was first introduced to Sebastian Barry with Days Without End published in 2016 and winner of the Costa Book Award and a Booker nominee. Days Without End hit me like a ton of fabulously written and such a tale. Did I ever imagine that another of his books could become so beloved? Well the Secret Scripture has. But it also made me REAL ANGRY. Set after the Irish Civil War, Roseanne Clear McNulty is about to turn 100 years old and wants to tell her story. Roseanne has spent most of... Innocent Betrayals Secret Scripture is a story of betrayals - by those we love most, of them in turn by us; but particularly our betrayal of ourselves in memory and history. We betray ourselves through memories in which we both find and avoid guilt. We are innocent because we are hapless when it comes to memory. They are of us but neither reliable nor controllable by us. Memories rarely comfort. Good ones remind us of loss; bad ones evoke regret. Curiously, memories become dissociated from... "History, as far as I can see, is not the arrangement of what happens, but a fabulous arrangement of surmises and guesses held up as a banner against the assault of withering truth. People often speculate on how history might be told had the voices of women not been silenced. Barry here gives us the written testament of a Presbyterian working class woman who has reached her hundredth year and has been incarcerated in an asylum for decades. The Irish troubles are never overtly centre stage but... The Secret Scriptures is a remarkable holy grail of writing. Barry masterfully writes a poetic psychological mystery where he magically weaves a story of 2 voices: One of Roseanne McNulty, who now sits in a mental institution and has for the past 40 odd years of her 100 year life; and the other of her psychiatrist, Dr Grene, who has known her for the duration of her stay. Roseanne sits in her room as she nears the end of her life, reflecting back through the daily journal she writes and hides in... Reading this novel I have felt as if I were peeling two onions: one yellow, one purple. First one, then the other, and back to the first and so on. My illusion was that after peeling its outer tunic and I proceeded to remove, slowly and gradually each scale leaf, I was lifting a veil and approaching the inner bud, a hidden core. The truth. The yellow onion has less thinner and finer leaves. In their frailty and subtler delicacy of colour, they are as the veiled and vulnerable memories of an old... I expected to love this book because I loved Days Without End. This is a radical change of pace. Mostly it made me angry. Not that there's anything wrong with the writing. It's a bit like exploring a forgotten or secret garden full of shy beauty if take the time to look. Based on news stories of the time and place, this is oddly a happy ending version of so many women's stories. ttps... The Catholic Church was all powerful, a time in Ireland when religious and political factions cause almost unceasing distress and death. A young beautiful woman, a protestant woman, dares to fall in love with a Catholic but will end up spending a great part of her one-hundred years inside a psychiatric institution. Why and how did this happen? A story written down by a very old woman, an account of the priest uncovered by Doctor Grene who is charged with discovering which of the residents... The author slowly weaves together two heart-wrenching and tragic versions of the life of Roseanne McNulty, a 100-year old woman residing (for much of her adult life) in a psychiatric asylum. The first version is Roseannes own elusive and often unreliable past recollection, recorded in her secret journal, hidden in the floorboards of her room. Another version is slowly revealed by her psychiatrist; Dr. Grene, as he investigates her sketchy past records and evaluates her suitability for release... Im going with 5 stars since three days after finishing, Im still thinking about how good this book was. It had me completely captivated from start to finish. The story was subtle but chilling, with many layers of tragedy and dark elements (a cemetery, rats, and a disturbing priest to name a few…not to mention the suspicion of the sanity of the main character. But the writing was beautiful and not a single word was wasted. I loved the gothic-like atmosphere that was created and how it tied in... I really loved this book, all of it, the prose, the content, the Irish-ness of it. The words are chosen so well that they flow smoothly in telling the story. Memory is a center of the tale as is Ireland and fate as in all Irish stories. There is love and hate, war but no real peace. There is always misunderstanding, but there are occasional attempts to move beyond this. The ending was foreshadowed to some degree but I didn't mind that at all. Once again it fits with the fateful-ness and Irish... First, if you're going to read this, please don't read the goodreads description. This book didn't change my world, but it was good. It's made up mostly of recollections by its very elderly narrator, but the way it uses (perhaps unreliable) memory isn't like, say, Ishiguro, who uses gradual revelations to turn a story on its head. There are surprises (or not, if you are the sort of person who guesses everything before you're told) but the surprises aren't supposed to make you think you've been... Sligo made me and Sligo undid me, but then I should have given up much sooner than I did being made or undone by human towns, and looked to myself alone. The terror and hurt in my story happened because when I was young I thought others were the author of my fortune or misfortune; I did not know that a person could hold up a wall made of imaginary bricks and mortar against the horrors and cruel, dark tricks of time that assail us, and be the author therefore of themselves. My father's... 4 "Roseanne had always lived on the edges of our known world. This is a decent place, if not home. If this were home I would go mad. How gracious she is to say that when a mental institution is a kinder place than home. What exactly happened to her and who's version of the retelling can you trust? A psychological mystery weaving back and forth in time over a period of almost 90 years, I had different sensations reading this atmospheric tale. Not a long book but the pacing got a bit monotonous... It is hard to resist a secret and harder yet when it is as masterfully unraveled as this one. Sebastian Barry tells an absorbing story about a 100-year-old woman and the secrets that installed her for many wretched decades in a mental hospital. The “terror and hurt” in Roseanne McNultys story has a monstrosity that seems inevitable in the historical landscape of Ireland in the 1920s and 1930s. Roseanne is powerless against harsh political realities and the unforgiving religious and social... Really wanted to like this one- the summary sounded like something I would fall right into- but alas, I trudged, slugged, and finally finished this book. Disappointed that I never connected to the characters or the story at all, surprised to find myself at this end of the spectrum when so many others enjoyed this one. Roseanne Clear has been living in Roscommon- a mental facility for the past 80 some odd years. Roscommon is being demolished and Dr. Grene is tasked with figuring out which... This book was sent to me by my mother, who is Irish, and it was sent to her by a childhood friend, also Irish, Joan's name on the front page; so, I felt obliged to read it, knowing full well it was not a book I would choose for myself. I read the first 80. 90 pages to be precise and realized as I was going along, that I have in fact read it before. And then more or less exactly from page 90 to about 199 I had no recollection of it at all - Blank. I must have put it down, and not returned. A slow but compelling thriller which covers the mysterious circumstances of an interned patient in a mental hospital in rural 40s Ireland. The supposedly "disturbed" character, Roseanne, now a hundred years old, and who has been interned for more than 50 years, is writing a secret journal in which she tells, little by little, the real story of her life. It's a sad but smartly and touching account of an extremely beautiful young woman who is cheated by the social system of her time. A society that... I enjoyed this book while I was reading it; emotions and ideas are wonderfully expressed. I am saying I loved the writing. Then came the end! I had been warned that it was bad, but the ending is so terribly bad that it is hard to imagine a worse ending. It is so improbable! Not just in one respect, but in absolutely everything that is left to be resolved. It just wrecks the whole story. The only good point is that the ending is pretty quick; it doesn't take up too many pages of the novel... I really struggled to continue with this book, so many friends rated it highly I kept on, thinking I would get into it eventually but I didn't. I didn't like the way the memories wafted in and out of present day, and apart from the sad and heartbreaking experience that the main character went through I felt that not much happened. Lots of people seem to rate this book highly so perhaps this just wasn't for me or I wasn't in the right frame of mind for this. Whew, Irish literature is always so painful to read. Brutality, cruelty, pathos, religion - set against a backdrop of famine and war. The smooth-as-fine-whiskey writing and the completely beguiling character of Roseanne - a 100-year-old woman who gives us an intimate glimpse into not only her tumultuous history but also her inner girlish self - kept me reading, even when I didn't want to know what bad thing would happen next. Dr. Grene is more down-to-earth, but he has his own contemplative side... Sebastian Barry is an Irish author who writes with lyricism that makes his prose sing. Reading a book by Barry is a sheer joy. Confined to an Irish mental institution as a young woman for social reasons, the reader meets Roseane Cleary McNulty as an old woman writing her life story in a journal, which she hides under the floor in her room in the same mental institution. She has been a resident in the asylum for so long that no one knows why she was committed or how old she really is. The "secret...

See more awards  » Edit Storyline Roseanne McNulty must vacate the soon-to-be demolished mental institution in Roscommon, Ireland that she's called home for over 50 years. The hospital's psychiatrist, Dr. William Grene, is called in to assess her condition. He finds himself intrigued by Roseanne's seemingly inscrutable rituals and tics, and her fierce attachment to her Bible, which she has over the decades transformed into a palimpsest of scripture, drawings, and cryptic diary entries. As Grene delves deeper into Roseanne's past, we see her as a young woman, whose charisma proves seductive. We learn that she moved to Sligo to work in her aunt's café, fell in love with a dashing fighter pilot, and that a local priest fell tragically in love with her.

Juli 2016 begonnen. Kommentare.

First lady governor of india. First lady salary. First lady eric bellinger audio. First lady movie. Subscribe to the Newsletter: Nothing in Scripture indicates that the spouse of a church office holder should receive some sort of honorary title such as First Lady. To do so elevates that spouse above others, puts undue pressure on her, and goes against biblical instruction for Christian leaders to serve and remain humble. The church offices listed in Ephesians 4:11–13 are apostles, prophets, evangelists, shepherds (pastors) and teachers. We are told God gave these leaders "to equip the saints for the work of ministry, for building up the body of Christ, until we all attain to the unity of the faith and of the knowledge of the Son of God, to mature manhood, to the measure of the stature of the fullness of Christ, so that we may no longer be children, tossed to and fro by the waves and carried about by every wind of doctrine, by human cunning, by craftiness in deceitful schemes. Rather, speaking the truth in love, we are to grow up in every way into him who is the head, into Christ, from whom the whole body, joined and held together by every joint with which it is equipped, when each part is working properly, makes the body grow so that it builds itself up in love" Ephesians 4:12–16. There is no position of "First Lady" ever mentioned in the Bible. The offices listed in the Bible are just that—offices, not titles. While many women are honored in the Bible, both in the Old and New Testaments, none are given titles. There are several wives of prominent leaders in the Bible who are not named or take no identifiable role in what happens, such as Noah's wife (Genesis 6—9) and Moses' wife. Even David's wife, Abigail, though she exhibited integrity and loyalty, is given no special title (1 Samuel 25. In the New Testament, Peter's wife is identified only though a mention of his mother-in-law (Matthew 8:14–15) but not named. Peter was a central figure in the building of the church. His wife does not receive a title. Others in the New Testament who were important, but did not receive titles, were Mary, Martha, Priscilla, Dorcas, the "elect lady" in 2 John 1:1, and the "elect sister" in 2 John 1:13. These "elect" women are not titled, nor granted an office, but identified by John as believers in Jesus as Savior and Lord, as all Christians are "elect"—that is, chosen by God (Ephesians 1:4. Some traditions call for honorary titles for the spouses of government leaders and heads of state. The wife of a U. S. president is called the First Lady. Some churches extend this honor to the wives of pastors. And some churches bestow upon the wife of a pastor more than an honor title, but also leadership roles and power to make decisions and co-pastor the church. There is no biblical mandate or example for this. In fact, the Bible does not support female pastors. We contend that no one, in a church setting, should be called First Lady because: • There is no God-ordained office identified in the Bible for such an office or title. • The title is man-made, so to speak, from the traditions of culture and society. • The use of First Lady could (and sometimes is) extended to the family's children as the First Son or First Daughter. This elevates the family above other members of the congregation, creating a hierarchy and threatening to establish a leadership dynasty, which is not how God designed the church to function. • Bestowing such a title opposes the spirit of humility, servanthood, impartiality, and mutual respect called for repeatedly in the New Testament (for example, Luke 6:31, Romans 11:18, Ephesians 4:1–16, Hebrews 13:16. • Elevating the wife of a pastor communicates that she deserves special privilege and entitlement. • Granting this title may spark competition among believers and put pressure on the pastor's wife to distinguish herself by the way she presents herself outwardly instead of focusing on the inner self (1 Peter 3:3–4. We don't question the right desire for a congregation to appreciate the wife and family of a pastor – often the family sacrifices greatly for the good of the congregation. It is good to find ways to appreciate and encourage pastors and their families. But bestowing titles, and possibly authority, that is not biblically supported is not a good way to do this. Allow the pastor's wife to minister in the way God has equipped and directed her. Do not impose some cultural expectation on her that cannot be found in the Bible. Related Truth: What is the role of the pastor's wife? Does a pastor's wife have a particular duty or role? Can women be church elders? Are women allowed to be deacons? What authority does a pastor have over a church? What was God's purpose in establishing the church? Return to: Truth about Church.

[1] 2] 3] The term is also used to describe a woman seen to be at the top of her profession or art. [4] The term is often used to a non-monarchical heads of state or chief executives who don't have that kind of style in their own country. Some countries have a title, official or unofficial, that is or can be translated as first lady. [5] The title is not normally used for the wife of a head of government who is not also head of state. First Gentleman is the male equivalent of the title in countries where the head of state's spouse has been a man, such as the Philippines or Malta. While there has never been a male spouse of a U. S. president. First Gentleman " is used in the United States for the husband of a governor. In the United States, collectively, the president of the United States and his spouse are known as the first couple [6] and, if they have children, they are usually referred to as the first family. Origin [ edit] The designation First Lady seems to have originated in the United States, where one of the earliest uses in print, in 1838, was in reference to Martha Washington. [39] Trinidad and Tobago [ edit] The wife of the current president uses the term "first lady. 40] United States of America [ edit] In American media, the term First Lady is often applied to the wife of a head of state in any country, irrespective of whether a different appellation (or none) is used in that country. For example, in 1902, the U. publication Munsey's Magazine said of the wife of Canadian Governor General the Earl of Minto: As the first lady in the land, she has done much to weld together the heterogeneous components of a colonial society which includes peoples of different races and of antagonistic religions. 41] The term was also used by Munsey's to refer to the wife of Mexico's leader, President Porfirio Díaz: In an 1896 piece about "The Daughters of Mexico" author Jeannie Marshall said of Carmen Romero Rubio de Díaz: She is still a young woman, though she has filled the position of 'first lady of the land' for many years, with marked success. 42] The U. Spanish-language newspaper La Prensa also called her " primera dama " when writing about her activities. [43] In the early days of the United States, there was no generally accepted title for the wife of the president. Many early first ladies expressed their own preference for how they were addressed, including the use of such titles as Lady. citation needed] One of the earliest uses of the term "first lady" was applied to Martha Washington in a profile by Mrs. C. H. Sigourney in 1838: Mrs. Sigourney, discussing how Martha Washington had not changed, even after her husband George became president, wrote that "The first lady of the nation still preserved the habits of early life. Indulging in no indolence, she left the pillow at dawn, and after breakfast, retired to her chamber for an hour for the study of the scriptures and devotion. 7] However, the term "first lady" would not come into common use until the late 1800s. Harriet Lane, niece of bachelor president James Buchanan, was the first woman to be called first lady while actually serving in that position. The phrase appeared in Frank Leslie's Illustrated Monthly in 1860, when he wrote, The Lady of the White House, and by courtesy, the First Lady of the Land. Once Harriet Lane was called first lady, the term was applied retrospectively to her predecessors. citation needed] The title first gained nationwide recognition in 1877, when Mary C. Ames wrote an article in the New York City newspaper The Independent describing the inauguration of President Rutherford B. Hayes. She used the term to describe his wife, Lucy Webb Hayes. citation needed] While historically the term has generally been used to refer to the wife of a president, there were occasions when another woman, such as the president's daughter, has filled the duties of first lady as hostess in the White House, if the president's wife was unwilling, unable, or if the president was a widower or bachelor. citation needed] As of 2019, the first lady of the United States is Melania Trump, wife of Donald Trump. The entire family of the head of state may be known familiarly as the " First Family. 44] The spouse of the second-in-command (such as a vice president) may be known as the " second lady. or vice-first lady. Less frequently, the family would be known as the "second family. citation needed] The spouse of a governor of a U. state is commonly referred to as the first lady or first gentleman of that state, for example "First Lady Tonette Marie Walker of Wisconsin. citation needed] The practice is less common for spouses of mayors but is nevertheless used for some, particularly in large cities; example: First Lady Amy Rule of Chicago " or "First Lady Kris Barrett of Milwaukee. 45] Mike Gregoire, husband of former Washington state governor Chris Gregoire, preferred to use his name instead of a common noun, calling himself "First Mike. 46] First Lady" is also used to refer, less formally, to wives of college and university presidents. citation needed] It has even been used in reference to female spouses of men who were chairmen of major corporations. citation needed] Ukraine [ edit] First Lady of Ukraine is the unofficial title given by the society to the wife of the president of Ukraine. Since Ukraine gained independence in 1991, the post has been highly ceremonial and has rarely played a role in social activism (except Marina Poroshenko, the first lady in 2014-19, who was engaged in the movement for inclusive education [47] 48. Non-spousal uses [ edit] In some situations, the title is bestowed upon a non-spouse. This includes terms like "First Family. First Daughter" and "First Son. citation needed] In the past, occasionally another woman, such as the president's daughter, has filled the duties of first lady as hostess in the White House, if the president's wife was unwilling, unable, or if the president was a widower or bachelor. Harriet Lane, niece of bachelor president James Buchanan was the first non-spouse to be called First Lady. citation needed] South Korean president Park Geun-hye has been referred to as First Lady to former president Park Chung-hee, who is her father. The title was bestowed upon her after her mother's assassination. [49] The title was also officially bestowed on Victoria Quirino-Delgado, the daughter of widower Elpidio Quirino (1948–53) sixth president of the Philippines. Victoria's mother, Alicia Quirino née Syquía, had been killed by occupying Japanese troops towards the end of the Second World War. While President Corazón Aquino (1986–92) was also widowed, the title was not given to her older children who would assist her in official duties. These included her son (and later president) Benigno Aquino III, who was a sort of de facto first gentleman; his four sisters, as under their mother's presidency, now unofficially share the duties of the first spouse. The current president, Rodrigo Duterte 's marriage was annulled, and his common-law wife is not qualified to take the title as they are not married yet. Instead, he named his daughter, Davao City Mayor Sara Duterte, as first lady. In 1994, Peruvian president Alberto Fujimori officially named his daughter Keiko "First Lady" after he had separated from his wife Susana Higuchi. citation needed] After taking office as Puerto Rico 's first female governor, Governor Sila Maria Calderón appointed her two daughters, Sila María González Calderón and María Elena González Calderón, to serve as first ladies. [50] Evo Morales, the president of Bolivia, is single, so his sister, Esther Morales Ayma, fulfills the role of first lady. [51] Following the leadership spill which installed Julia Gillard as the first female prime minister of Australia on 24 June 2010, some news media referred to her de facto partner, Tim Mathieson, as the "First Bloke. 52] Apolitical uses [ edit] It has become commonplace in the United States for the title of "First Lady" to be bestowed on women, as a term of endearment, who have proven themselves to be of exceptional talent or unique notoriety in non-political areas. The phrase is often, but not always, used when the person in question is either the wife or "female equivalent" of a well-known man (or men) in a similar field. For example, the term has been applied in the entertainment field to denote the "First Lady of Television. Lucille Ball) the "First Lady of Song. Ella Fitzgerald) the "First Lady of Country Music. Tammy Wynette, although Loretta Lynn was also known by the title) the "First Lady of Star Trek. actor/producer Majel Barrett) the "First Lady of American Soul. Aretha Franklin. 53] the "First Lady of the Grand Ole Opry. Loretta Lynn) and the "First Lady of the American Stage. Helen Hayes. 54] The term "first lady" is also used to denote a woman who occupies the foremost social position within a particular locality, in this sense being particularly popular in Africa, where the pre-eminent female noble in some chieftaincy hierarchies, such as those of the Yoruba people, is often referred to by the title. [55] In recent years, the term has also been used to refer to the wife of the pastor of a church, especially in predominantly black churches.
