Stagnant since 1903, at an elevation of 2,744 m, a volcano erupts on the mythical and majestic Baekdu Mountain; ; Writer: Hae-jun Lee; Actors: Hye-jin Jeon; average rating: 7,8 of 10 Star; 2hour 10 minutes. ( First) ( Previous) ( Next) ( Patreon) Without Parth to guide them, tracking through the forest was hard work, even with Semari jumping between trees and checking ahead. Stathis did what she could to try and make a path for the others, continually running across broken walls that blocked their progress, or woods too dense to break through. After half the day, they’d finally managed to hack their way back to their campsite, without any sign of Parth. By day, there was no sign of ghosts, or anything more savage than squirrels. Still, they moved as a group through the building, quickly checking the room they had camped in. With that empty, they had little choice but to press on towards the main fortress in the centre, the road there at least mostly clear, without any sign of the unicorn. The walls around it were intact, the moat steaming slightly, sinuous shapes moving beneath the muck and froth. The main entrance was easy to find, but impossible to access – whatever bridge there had once been was long gone, with a portcullis on the far side blocking the entrance even if they could cross. ‘Don’t suppose you’ve got anything to fly us over? ’ Stathis asked Hakara. ‘Doubt anything will have gotten in, and the inside rooms might have stuff that hasn’t rotted away completely. ’ Hakara eyed up the size of the walls, and the width of the moat. ‘I fear not, Miss Stathis. If the portcullis were open, then I might be able to transport myself across, but I lack more advanced movement spells. Does Miss Janaxia not have any spells that could help? ’ Before anyone could answer, Semari yelled. ‘Parth! ’ A ghostly figure staggered towards them, translucent in the sunlight. It was Parth, but she was injured, a bandage wrapped around where Stathis had shot her, and limping and staggering along, face twisted in pain. She glanced behind herself, then moved forward, stepping onto the water as Semari tried to grab her, Semari’s hands passing through Parth’s form. Whatever world she was in must have something different from here, as she walked out over the water, limping forward and through the portcullis. Hakara cast a spell, blue dust flickering from her fingers. Shapes formed into being around them, vaguely defined humanoid forms, clawed hands reaching forward. Janaxia stepped back to avoid one, teetering on the edge of the water before Stathis yanked her back onto solid ground. The ghostly forms simply moved through them, without anything more than a momentary chill sensation. ‘Shit! We need to find another way in. Hakara, anything you can do to talk to her, or pull her here? ’ From the look on Hakara’s face, that would be a “no”. They skirted around the moat as quickly as they could, trying to find another entrance. They soon came to what would have been a heavily defended side entrance, a turreted and gated guardhouse, their passage blocked by heavy metal doors. Faded letters were etched into the archway, Janaxia squinting at them before supplying a translation. ‘Those that would seek passage, pledge thy troth to enter. ’ ‘Anyone know weird elven riddles? ’ Everyone shook their heads. ‘Right then, let’s get the crowbars. Hakara, can you check it’s not going to blast us with fire or anything? Or summon that damn unicorn. ’ ‘Yes, Miss Stathis. ’ She began casting some magic over the doorway, parts of it flickering pale blue in responses to her spell. ‘Semari, give me a hand with this. ’ It was worn enough they could slide a crowbar into a crack, working it back and forth, Stathis trading off with Semari. A harsh green light started to shine from the doorway, suddenly blinking out as Hakara disrupted it, the power disrupting with a loud ‘crack’. Finally, the thing gave, scraping open over the rubble-strewn floor and allowing them inside. Semari ran ahead, into the shadows of the gatehouse. A few moments after she vanished from sight, a loud crashing echoed down the hallway, followed by Semari’s cursing. Stathis drew her sword and ran towards the sound, finding Semari arced into an awkward position, surrounded by weapons, a variety of sharp edges and spikes around her, fallen from weapon racks. A white cat was sat on her chest, licking itself, apparently unconcerned with the noise. Semari managed to twist herself into a bridge position over the weapons without slicing herself, the cat digging claws into her clothing to keep its position. Stathis knelt to look at it, checking for any signs of demonic power or ghostly influence – scales, twisted limbs, eyes that burnt with power from beyond the grave. There was a red gem between its eyes, somehow melded with the skin, glinting in the light. It meowed at her, disdainfully sniffing her extended hand before giving the proffered gauntlet an experimental nibble, glowering at her when it couldn’t penetrate the metal. Janaxia and Hakara bundled into the room behind her, both blazing with arcane power, ready to unleash spells of destruction, before the energy slowly faded as they noted the lack of targets. Hakara examined the cat, keeping herself out of clawing distance, a momentary ring of blue light surrounding the creature and raising a meow of protest before she reported her findings. ‘It is faintly magical, but not unduly so. I doubt it is anything powerful masquerading as a simple cat. ’ Semari was beginning to strain and groan beneath it. ‘It’s pointy at every end! Get it off! ’ Janaxia tickled it under the chin, making it preen, as it smugly accepted her touch. ‘Are you a good cat? Are you? ’ It stretched, digging claws deeper into Semari as it made itself more comfortable. ‘Mew! ’ It meowed back at her. ‘Janaxia, are you talking to it? Does it know where Parth is? ’ Stathis asked. Janaxia meowed at it again, stroking it. ‘Don’t be silly, of course it can’t talk, it’s a cat. Although, from the particularly fine colouration, I would assume that it is an elven cat, and therefore possessed of some level of magical power. It may be able to assist us though; they are said to be more intelligent than normal cats. Isn’t that right? ’ She tickled it under the chain, as it rumbled back with a purr of satisfaction. ‘There may be a population of the creatures – with such fine breeding, any kittens would be valuable. Any number of nobles would happily pay a great deal for such a beast as a pet. Transportation may be complicated though. ’ Semari’s arms were beginning to shake, as she strained to support herself. ‘Just get it off me! ’ Janaxia sighed, then carefully picked the creature up, nestling it in her arms. It shifted around, making itself comfortable, rubbing its face against Janaxia, as Semari slowly rose to her feet. ‘Damn thing is probably in cahoots with that pointy-headed horse bastard! ’ She leant down next to it. ‘I’m keeping an eye on you! ’ It stretched, casually extending an arm, claws protruding and glaring back at her. Janaxia shifted protectively. ‘Don’t be so paranoid! He’s simply a good kitty, isn’t that right? ’ She stroked it again, earning a satisfied meow back. The thing looked far too smug, nestled in Janaxia’s arms, but hadn’t tried to murder anyone yet, so it seemed unfair to chase it off or kill it. ‘Right, so we’ve got a cat now. If we get ambushed by something, throw that in their face. Hakara, can you cast that big divination spell again, check there’s not some massive magical something nearby that’s going to kill us all? ’ ‘Yes, Miss Stathis. ’ As Hakara started to cast the spell, Stathis continued speaking. ‘Now we need to keep moving and find out where the hell Parth might be, and how to bring her back here. Any of you know anything about where to go? ’ Everyone shook their heads. ‘We’re just going to have to keep looking then. And try and find her before nightfall – she might have some idea about where to go to not get attacked by ghosts again. We’ve probably got about four more hours until sundown. This place looks deserted. ’ The cat mewed in protest. ‘You’re a cat, you don’t count. The unicorn can’t get in here, and those ghosts don’t seem to come out during the day. If we split up, we can look faster that way. Meet back here in two hours. ’ Hakara’s spell was almost complete, blue spheres trickling back in, building up an image of the surrounding area. Somewhere deeper inside the castle, below them, was a bright concentration of power, surrounded by smaller dots at various points around it, roughly corresponding to the inner keep. ‘We’ve got a lot of ground to cover. Hakara, we’ll work together. Get any protection spells you need up and running. ’ Hakara was peering at the spell, before looking up, trying to orientate it to her surroundings. ‘I will do what I can. The place may still have some magical traps, but they all seem to be towards the central keep. Any traps out here would be purely mechanical. ’ ‘Thanks, that’s something useful to know. ’ Semari was poking at the magical spell, as Janaxia also moved close, the cat reaching out and swiping a claw through it as well. They glared at each other, until Stathis put a hand on Semari’s shoulder. ‘Go scout, see if you can find anything magical or portal-y, that might bring Parth back. ’ They split up, each taking a different path, Semari racing off, Janaxia stroking and talking to the cat as it leapt free of her arms, sauntering ahead of her, mewing back. Stathis started looking for stairs upwards, a route onto the battlements, Hakara staying close behind.

S. National Natural Landmark Designated 2006 The Ashfall Fossil Beds of Antelope County in northeastern Nebraska are rare fossil sites of the type called lagerstätten that, due to extraordinary local conditions, capture a moment in time ecological "snapshot" in a range of well-preserved fossilized organisms. Ash from a Yellowstone hotspot eruption 10-12 million years ago created these fossilized bone beds. The site is protected as Ashfall Fossil Beds State Historical Park, a 360-acre (150 ha) park that includes a visitor center with interpretive displays and working fossil preparation laboratory, and a protected ongoing excavation site, the Hubbard Rhino Barn, featuring fossil Teleoceras (native hippo-like ancestral rhinoceros) and ancestral horses. [2] The Ashfall Fossil Beds are especially famous for fossils of mammals from the middle Miocene geologic epoch. The Ashfall Fossil Beds are stratigraphically part of the Serravallian -age [3] Ogallala Group. Bruneau-Jarbidge event [ edit] The Ashfall deposit preserves the fossilized remains of ancient animals that perished in a dense volcanic ash fall which occurred during the late Miocene, approximately 12 million years ago; the animals had come to a waterhole seeking relief. The fall of ash drifted downwind from the Bruneau-Jarbidge supervolcano eruption (in present-day Idaho), nearly 1, 000 miles (1, 600 km) west of the Ashfall site. A large number of very well preserved fossil Teleoceras (extinct hippo-like relatives of rhinos), small three-toed and one-toed horses, camels, and birds have been excavated. Many animals were preserved with their bones articulated; one rhino still bears her unborn fetus, while others retain the contents of their last meal. The bones of the animals show features that indicate that the animals died of lung failure induced by inhaling volcanic ash. The smaller animals with smaller lung capacity were the first to die, and the larger animals were the last. Bite-marks on some bones show that local predators (the carnivorous bone-crunching dog Aelurodon) scavenged some of the carcasses, but no predator remains have yet surfaced. There are also abundant clues to the region's ecology, indicating a savanna of grassland interspersed with trees that luxuriated in a warmer, milder climate than today's. The rapidly accumulating ash, windblown into deep drifts at low places like the waterhole site, remained moderately soft. The ash preserved the animals in three dimensions; not even the delicate bones of birds or the carapaces of turtles were crushed. Above the layer of ash, a stratum of more erosion-resistant sandstone has acted as "caprock" to preserve the strata beneath. Paleontologists working on the site Preservation [ edit] The first hint of the site's richness was the skull of a juvenile rhinoceros noticed in 1971 eroding out of a gully at the edge of a cornfield. In 1971, University of Nebraska State Museum paleontologist Michael Voorhies was walking with his wife Jane through a series of gullies on Melvin Colson’s farm in northeastern Nebraska and made this discovery. [4] The Nebraska Game and Parks Foundation purchased the Ashfall site in 1986. [5] Ashfall Fossil Beds State Historical Park opened in 1991. [4] The site was declared a National Natural Landmark on May 9, 2006. [6] The park's Hubbard Rhino Barn opened in 2009. The 17, 500-square-foot (1, 630 m 2) pavilion lets visitors observe as paleontologists carry out excavations of new discoveries exactly where the fossilized remains lie preserved. [7] Specially constructed walkways afford visitors an unobstructed close-up view of paleontologists at work during the summer field season. Species [ edit] The remains of Teleoceras are so numerous and concentrated that the main section of Ashfall is called the "Rhino Barn". Other fossils at the "Rhino Barn" include the remains of horses and camels. [8] Taxa discovered in the Ashfall deposits include: five genera of horse: Cormohipparion, Protohippus, Pseudhipparion, Neohipparion and Pliohippus three genera of camelids: Procamelus, Aepycamelus and Protolabis three genera of canids: Leptocyon, Cynarctus and evidence of scavenging from a bone-crushing canid, possibly Aelurodon one genus of rhinoceros: Teleoceras one genus of saber-toothed deer: Longirostromeryx three bird species: crowned crane ( Balearica exigua), a rail, and Apatosagittarius (a Miocene hawk resembling the now living secretarybird) two species of turtle: Hesperotestudo and pond turtle [8] See also [ edit] Gray Fossil Site List of fossil sites (with link directory) Pipe Creek Sinkhole References [ edit] External links [ edit] Ashfall Fossil Beds State Historical Park Nebraska Game and Parks Commission Ashfall Fossil Beds State Historical Park University of Nebraska State Museum Ashfall Fossil Beds Skeleton Map University of Nebraska State Museum.

It looks clear! ’ Stathis swung her sword, the blade cutting through the arm of a guardian spirit as it punched at Hakara, managing to deflect the attack slightly. Hakara squeaked, the fist bouncing off her enchanted skin, still with enough force to send her staggering towards the edge. Stathis caught her, pulling her back towards safety and keeping her standing. ‘Let’s keep moving and hope there’s not more of those things! ’ They’d managed to find their way through into the oldest part of the fortress, finding a crack in the defensive wall just about large enough for them to fit through. Despite the fine elven architecture, the layout was much the same as any other castle, with narrow hallways, defensive chokepoints and steep staircases. Amidst the exploring, Hakara had managed to disarm several magical traps, before some guardian spirit had activated and begun chasing them. Stathis’ sword passed through it, dragging out trails of ethereal goop that were drawn back into the mass of the spirit, a roughly humanoid form carrying an oversized spear. They ran along the battlements, with what would have been a stunning view over the town, if it weren’t for the danger of death. Beneath them, a flicker of white caught her eye, the unicorn standing outside the castle, staring back at her, horn glinting nastily in the sunlight. Something else to be dealt with in the future. From here, if things went badly wrong, then she could grab Hakara and fly away, although that would require some awkward explanations afterwards. She blocked a thrust, as a spray of acid sprayed out from Hakara’s hands and covered the spirit, its form fading slightly before solidifying itself again. Stathis pulled Hakara along behind her, keeping her moving, while she panted from exertion, even less fit than Janaxia. They ran through a series of chambers – a guardroom, a barracks, a commander’s office - Stathis absently noting the loot that was around, if they survived long enough to grab out and somehow get it out. A pillar of crystal blocked a passageway, too dense to break, a skeleton held within it. Stathis pushed against it, the material too heavy to shift, and too tough to break through. The spirit followed them, flowing through the entrance and then reforming, as it was too large to get through normally. The only exit led to a balcony, overlooking a drop into a festhall, the wooden floor broken and moss-covered, long tables rotted and decayed. ‘Can you make us float or anything? Otherwise this will be a nasty drop. ’ Hakara was already scrabbling onto the handrail, robes flapping as she clambered up and tried to prepare herself to drop as gently as possible. As the spirit moved towards them, steady and implacable, Stathis straddled the handrail herself, wrapping an arm around Hakara’s waist and pulling her down. She fell, taking the brunt of the impact onto herself, trying to land as gently as she could, the floor creaking under the assault. Then it collapsed, rotten wood giving way beneath their combined weight, sending them plummeting into darkness. Mist obscured Stathis’ vision, hot steam rushing past her. She felt their fall slow, as Hakara activated a spell, braking their acceleration, just before she splashed into water, enough force still for the impact to sting. Luckily it was deep enough to absorb her fall, keeping a tight hold of Hakara as the wizard twisted in her arms. With a few strong kicks, she broke the surface, treading water as Hakara coughed and spluttered, before managing to catch her breath again. Whatever chamber they were in was large enough that Stathis couldn’t see the walls, or even the ceiling they’d dropped through, thick mist blocking her vision, impossible to see anything beyond the water around them. From somewhere in the distance came a low moan, and the susurrating muttering of the elven language. Stathis pulled Hakara close, trying to calm her. ‘There’s something out there. We need to be careful. ’ Hakara nodded back, managing to supress another coughing fit, trying to keep quiet. Swimming quietly was hard, especially with someone in her arms, but her feet soon found the smooth stone floor rising up beneath her. The mist baffled her senses, every twist of shadow in the haze an enemy, the mist shifting and wisping on the water. There was a series of soft slapping sounds, followed by a sigh, then a chink of glass. The muttering was closer now, the water falling away, now only up to her knees, lapping at a just-visible shore. A shape swelled up from the mist, a white stone block covered with fine black tendrils, twitching slightly, sighing and moaning slightly. A torso rose behind it, topped with a head, arms twisting and moving over… itself? Stathis stepped back in startlement. The black tendrils shifted and moved, a dark, demonic face appearing from beneath the strands of hair, twists of dark bone spiralling out, eyes focusing through the mist, a few strands glowing a satisfied crimson against the white stone. ‘Ah, Stathis. ’ Janaxia gave a long, satisfied sigh, as the figure atop her moved. ‘We were wondering when you would arrive. ’ She was laid atop a rock slab, a glass of wine close at hand, pillowing her head on her arms. Atop her was an elf, their fingers digging into Janaxia’s back, giving her a vigorous massage. Parth was sat on a high stool and holding a glass of tiered liquids, red at the bottom and blue at the top, her body wrapped in an azure sarong, wounded arm bandaged, more bandages wrapped around her hands. Sat next to her was another elf, wearing plain, well-made clothing, looking curiously at them. Stathis looked back uncertainly, unsure as to what was happening, before putting Hakara down, letting her flick her robes, water spraying everywhere. ‘Going swimming in armour? I know you like to test yourself, but that really is a bit much, dear. I assume you found the service entrance or somesuch? Yesssssss, there, just a little harder. ’ Janaxia’s words trailed off into happy moans as the masseuse worked on her back. Stathis stepped onto the shore, aware that every step was squelching and soaked, her clothing drenched. Parth was watching her, face bland as she sipped her drink, the colours now mingling together. ‘Parth. What the hell is going on, and where are we? And how did you get here? You were in the astral plane or something, we saw you run past us! ’ Stathis stretched and twisted, the humidity sucking at her clothes. She unbuckled her breastplate to gain some relief, as Parth considered a response. ‘A remnant of a remnant, preserved through the ages. The seal is broken. ’ Stathis stared at her, waiting for some further explication, which steadfastly failed to appear, Parth simply staring back with bland calmness. ‘Right. So, we broke through a magical seal, there were some people preserved here that are now magically awake. ’ Parth nodded, taking another sip. ‘Fine. So why is Janaxa getting a massage, how are you here, and can someone get me a goddam drink, as that’s apparently what we’re doing now? ’ ‘Palace staff. Rescued me. Thankful. ’ Parth said another word, something long and lilting, the elf next to her nodding before walking off, vanishing into the mist. ‘So, you found your way here. Did none of you think to come and find me or Hakara? We could have been killed by a guardian spirit! Janaxia, how the hell did you get down here? ’ Janaxia’s voice was slow and drawn out between sighs, her massage clearly pleasurable. ‘I simply followed Llewdu, he showed me a route. Where the welcome was most hospitable, I must say. They are most glad to have been relieved from whatever spell bound them. ’ Something to do with the crystals, I believe. They were powering an incredibly potent spell, as well as preserving the survivors, until our arrival broke the enchantment The cat jumped onto the table, staring at Stathis before slowly, deliberately, arcing its body to lick its rear end. Stathis resisted the urge to push it off as she dripped water everywhere, the other elf reappearing with a tray, holding several shots and a tall glass, filled with ice. Some form of ritual ensued, the shots getting mixed together, light sparkling as the colours mingled, the resulting combination a lurid green. They tapped the glass, the drink briefly steaming before it was handed over. Stathis accepted it and took a sip. The flavour was sweet, some herbal flavour beneath the burn of alcohol. She downed it, glad of at least some relief and refreshment. ‘Thanks, that’s pretty good stuff. So the elves are fine with us relaxing here? And where’s Semari, do we need to rescue her as well? ’ Parth responded. ‘Darkness beckons, and must be destroyed. But rest. Briefly. ’ A soft noise came up beneath Stathis, Semari’s voice suddenly very loud, and very, very close. ‘Hey, Stathis! You found your way here! Why did you go swimming in your clothes? That must be uncomfortable. ’ Stathis turned, finding Semari right behind her, fabric strips wound about her chest and loins, before she shook her head rapidly, making water flick everywhere, Janaxia tutting in annoyance as she was splashed. ‘I got chased by those statue things, jumped onto the roofs, then found, like, a throneroom thing, load of gold everywhere, some fancy dude on the throne, all in crystal. Then found a hidden passageway at the back that led to, like, this super-fancy dressing room, and some kinda butler-elf showed me down here. Pretty fancy, right? How’d you get down here? ’ ‘I fell through the floor, along with Hakara. ’ By now, Hakara had managed to dry herself off, and then started to clean Stathis, using magic to pull countless tiny spheres of water from her clothing. ‘After escaping a magical protection spirit guardian thing. Sorry, what’s your name? ’ She asked the elf. ‘Can I have another? ’ ‘I am Cerondyari, my pride to aid allies of such an august and wise queen. ’ She placed a hand over her heart and bowed. ‘As you wish. ’ They disappeared into the mist again, leaving Stathis to remove her boots and padded jerkin, getting slightly more comfortable in the humidity as Hakara continued to magically dry her. ‘So, what the hell do we do now? Is there someone in charge we need to speak to? It better not be the damn cat! ’ It looked up from cleaning its backside to give her a scathing look, before returning to its licking, tongue rasping against fur. ‘There’s a shiny elf man, but he’s all in crystal. ’ Semari continued to be almost, but not quite, helpful. ‘And there’s, like, magical glowy stuff as well. Looks spooky, but normal-spooky, not Janaxia-spooky. ’ ‘Parth? ’ ‘The balance is broken. Peace must be preserved. The singer must be slain. ’ Cerondyari came back with more drinks, having correctly judged Stathis’ mood and not bothering with any preparation this time, just a series of differently-flavoured shots and a tankard of beer. ‘Can you take me to whoever’s in charge? Do you have a boss or something? ’ Cerondyari looked at her blankly, looking at Parth for guidance, until Parth spoke in elven, getting a quick response and passing the message back to Stathis. ‘The way has been prepared. ’ ‘OK. That means “yes”, and not “weird magical portal-path to crazy otherworld”, right? ’ Parth nodded. ‘Let’s go then, see whoever’s in charge and find out what the hell is going on. Parth, anything else we should know? ’ Parth shook her head. Janaxia waved a drowsy hand. ‘I am content to hear your summary. But by all means, go ahead without me, and I will aid you later. ’ Stathis picked up her drained glass, the ice clinking as she waved the masseuse back, before up-ending the glass onto Janaxia, pouring the ice onto her bare back. Janaxia gave a low, long moan, back arcing, the ice rolling into the small of her back. Stathis pressed an ice cube down, pinning it in place. ‘You’re coming with us, you can get rubbed down later. Let’s go. ’ She let go, letting Janaxia twitch the ice cube away, sighing in resigned defeat.
